Jarke is pleasantly surprised that Pearl is still Pearl to some extent. But now comes the fun part, figuring out what happened. Jarke takes a few minutes to sort his thoughts and decides to try something with Pearl.
Assuming Pearl's communication is limited as implied. Jarke begins to question Pearl...
"Pearl, I'm glad you're kind of, well, maybe not well, but, anyway you're alive still which is good. Let's start with this. I'm going to ask you a series of questions, I would like for you to express "Yes" or "No" by raising your right or left arm, er, leg. Right is Yes, Left is No. Understand?"
Assuming she understands, Jarke will begin asking the following questions.
1) Do you know who did this?
2) Do you know why this happened?
3) Besides Lorah and Donnie, has anyone else recently threatened you that could be a suspect?
4) Are there people who may be out to get your fortune or the Mariah?
5) Do you trust Zim or Fil?
6) Are you familiar with this magic which has affected you?
7) We can try to discretely escort you out of here if need be, would you like us to take you somewhere else?
Depending on the answers, Jarke will continue with follow-up questions

Lucy sees Alain standing there, seemingly watching the pair but not acting.
Markel I presume. Yes you can! My name is Lucy, I am here on behalf of Pearl. She has fallen ill with some unknown malady. Last I knew she was working on the well, and when she returned to the Mariah she collapsed. We brought her into a room and Alain here detected a foul magical haze affecting her, her limbs made loud popping sounds and snapped unnaturally backwards. Do you have anything that may treat such an issue. Donnie and Lorah, do you have any suggestions, you are both well traveled.

Fox does his best to help interpret anything if needed and just tries to smooth communication between Jarke and Pearl. {For the DM}
Fox can normally stay shifted for up to 3 hours, modify that based on the strange shape he has assumed for the first time. |

Lorah grins wickedly at Donnie.

She turns to face Lucy, Lucy, and Alain, her grin turning into a severe expression.

While Jarke was hoping to get a few more answers before any more interruptions, alas, fate isn't always so kind. Jarke uses hand signals to Fox to help get one of the bedsheets over Pearl, just in case he's not able to persuade Zimmy to stay out of the room. If done, Jarke opens the door so that he can wedge himself out, not allowing any space for Zimmy to bust in. Jarke speaks to Zimmy, "Zimmy, I can tell you that Pearl's in there and she was very specific that she doesn't want to see anyone in her current condition. Something happened in that well and she's definitely not at her best. Frankly, I'm a bit afraid she could be contagious. Since Fox and I may have already been exposed, we'll watch over her while she gets some rest. Want me to take a message for her?"{Spoiler}

You should help, lady Lorah, because you can. I am sure it is not only the right thing to do, but prudent as well. Perhaps whatever has befallen Pearl will convince her she isn't the woman she used to be and running the Mariah is a young persons game. Perhaps she will feel indebted to you. But perhaps most importantly you have stated in front of witnesses that you can help her, choosing not to do so at this point would be a crime in many parts of the world, something I believe you don't wish burdening down your name. Now please, time is of the essence. Go with Alain, he can take you there, I fear some of the more rash members of our cadre will react harshly if you barge in without one of us accompanying you. Lucy and I have something else to unravel.{Persuasion Roll} person29:1D20+3 → 18(15 + 3)After Lucy makes her speech (either successful or not) she asks Lucy to follow her back to the well, there must have been someone nearby who saw something, or perhaps she overlooked something her first time there.

Donnie looks back and forth from Lucy to Lorah, expecting the woman to say something, after an awkward silence, he speaks up.
She's right Lorah. This would look bad if you didn't help.
Plus, hey! Maybe she'll give me a rematch!
Lorah rolls her eyes, then gives in.
Take me to her.
Back at the Black Mariah...
Zim takes a few cautious steps away from the door.
Contagious....egh...Just ye give er me best theen. I'll bee down thee stairs, cook'en.
Zim quickly runs back down stairs, you can hear him loudly shout
Soap!?
Fox, you are able to maintain your shift as long as usual. Pearl communicates to you that she is very hungry...like freakishly hungry... her bulbous bug eyes dart back and forth between you two....

Lucy trusts Alain will safely take Donnie and Lorah back to the Black Mariah. She asks little Lucy to come with her and she dashes back to the well to investigate the area further. Once the Lucys and Lumi arrive at the well, Lucy casts Light on a rock and tosses it in the well, to see how deep it goes and to see if there are any obvious signs of a struggle/attack. |

Jarke takes the initiative upon seeing the scarab start acting a bit peckish.
"Fox, I think most scarabs eat dung, but judging by the looks of her, I think she wants some meat."
Jarke turns to exit and yells back at Fox, "Be right back, transform into a porcupine if she gets feisty!"
Jarke enters the kitchen and attempts to grab whatever meat he can find first. He will avoid talking to Zim and Fil as best he can and so he can get back up once he's got a few pounds worth of meat.

Fox does his best to reassure Pearl and keep her calm, telling her food is on the way. Being in this form, can Fox tell what type of food would be best for Pearl?

Jarke and Lucy feed Pearl. She seems content with normal people food, regardless of her new scarab form.
She next starts to ask, in beetle communication, what now?
Lucy, your rock hits water, illuminates what kinda appears like a lot more water/deeper well than you would guess Pearl could have dug by herself in that time, but then it is swirled off to the side, out of sight....which seems strange.
The sun is slighty west in the sky, so light isn't shining directly into the well. Also, roll investigate, to search for clues.

Lumi...that was strange. Can you fly down into the water a bit, the rock seemed to be pulled away by a current or something, which is strange for a well, don't you think? Lucy, I may do something reckless and dangerous, if I disappear or something, live in The Light and tell my friends what happened, okay?Lucy attempts to lower herself down the well, tying her rope around the well. She doesn't want to enter the water yet, just look around while Lumi illuminates it. Lucy will also cast Light on herself, making sure she can still see if for some reason Lumi doesn't go down or gets swept away or whatever.

"Pearl, I don't know why you are this way, but I have to believe that someone did this to you. If we can find out who did this, or how, or why, I think we have a shot at changing you back. So if you don't mind, I'd like to find out as much as we can so we can figure this out. I'll even make a crude alphabet you can point at each letter for more complex answers."
Jarke draws a semi-circle of letters around Pearl so she can point as need be.
"1) First off, do you have any information that would help us figure this out?
2) I know we've just met, but has anyone ever blackmailed you? Be honest, it could save us time that you don't have.
3) You said you didn't trust Fil, is it possible he had something to do with this? He did send you to the well.
4) Do you have any suspicions regarding what happened? What's your gut tell you?"

As if seeing the alphabet jars something in his memory fox shifts back into human form. "Hmm shame on me, lets make things a little easier."With a wave of his hands, Cade speaks {loquere terrae}
Cade casts the first level spell Speak with Animals.
Cade then repeats Jarke's questions in scarab tongue, seeming to forget that Pearl can understand them in common. |
